Ok, supporting evidence for my "Mrs. Maxwell was stupid" theory...

Does anyone remember seeing ANYWHERE in his apartment an old photo of a woman? A wedding photo? A photo of his wife? Anything?

I would guess that most people still keep old photos around of their beloved after they die. He's got J Edgar, FBI Wanted posters, and some old photos of old army buddies on the wall. Why not her?

If she leaves you for a used car salesman in Vegas, you take her photo, paste it on a bullseye, bring it down to the firing range, and take aim.

Perhaps there are some who would react otherwise. But perhaps...more evidence???

Ah, man, I need a life.

Absolutely she's dead.

And our sensitive Fed, who loved her so much, was so traumatized from her death he hasn't been truly able to recover and seriously consider remarrying, would no doubt hide most of the few photos and things he has of her in his roll top desk and in his closet and trunk coffee table. That's for late at night to look at once more, rarely, maybe on her birthday or her death's anniversary, when he's home alone and has a full bottle of scotch by his side.

Very noir!

For me, Jo, the leaving him for a car salesman is both too much a parody and too cliched for me to take seriously. But, if that works for you I can fully understand and we all know that we all interpret certain things differently in the series as so much was unexplained. There's no right or wrong. Him not having things remembering his wife around could be due to her leaving or her death; whichever each person believes means that whatever happened was terribly traumatic to him, our poor dear decent Fed, and too painful to view each and everyday.

Without a doubt, definitely, 100% dead, dead, dead.....

Yes, of course, he has no photos of her...he loved her so much he could not bare to have photos of her out to see. He is the type, as we know, who would bury his feelings and would not let it be known how much it hurts him that she is gone. So, he hides his grief from the world, including us and Ralph....until he meets what's her name, and then because he finally has feelings again, feelings he only had once before, like he had felt for his late wife, he finally begins to let us see that side of him.

So, that is my take on his wife. His very dead wife. I know Maxwell. It would take quite a woman....more a woman than what's her name, to make him forget his late wife......hmmm, maybe me..... ;)
